Part 1

Priming the Pump

In this first section, we'll fill you in on everything you need to know before you begin a weight-training program, including some important advice about how you really can't afford not to work out. Many people want to work out but feel intimated by the newness of this foreign place with sweaty strangers and loud music. We'll familiarize you with the nuances of the gym so that those first days are largely anxiety-free.

Chapter 1 is loaded with compelling reasons why you should lift weights—to feel and look good, to lose weight, to improve your serve, as well as to make friends—and more.

Once we've convinced you that you should lift, in Chapter 2 we'll give you some tips on how to find the time in your busy schedule. Working out may seem totally impractical until you realize how to do it efficiently. In Chapter 3, we'll explain what exactly happens to your muscles when you lift and discuss the pros and cons of lifting in the gym or at home. (Hint: we're biased to heading to a gym.)

Chapters 4 and 5 tell you all you need to know about choosing the right gym. And we also give you the lowdown on how to equip your home gym if that's the route you choose to take.
