The Clean and Jerk

While this lift sounds like one of those goofy Jim Carey movies, in fact this is a deadly serious lift where competitors hoist far more weight than the snatch. As the name implies, the clean and jerk is a two-part movement. For the clean, the lifter must yank the weight from the platform to the shoulders in one motion and stand erect. The jerk part is where the lifter thrusts the bar from his shoulders to a position overhead in one motion while splitting his legs. If he's made it that far, the lifter must put his wobbly legs together and stand motionless. After he gets the okay sign, it's time to send the weight crashing back to earth where it belongs.
