The Bench

The bench press is the second event and, like the squat, requires a substantial bit of technical precision. Here are the basics:

>- The lifter brings her feet as far back toward her head as possible in order to arch the back.

>- A spotter lifts the bar off the rack and hands it to the lifter.

> The lifter takes a deep breath and lowers the bar until it touches her chest. Only after it comes to a complete stop can the grunting competitor press the weight off her chest. Any bouncing of the bar or uneven extension of the arms and the lift is disallowed.
