Spinning, which is done on an exercise bike, was developed in California by a character named Johnny G. Typically accompanied by loud funky tunes and sparkling and flashing lights, you stand and sit, spin fast and slow to the calls of your instructor. No one moves (at least not forward) but you get an incredible workout.

Jonathan and Deidre have friends who swear by spin classes. One couple, Richard and Belinda, take the spin classes together every chance they get. The reason this class is

especially good for Richard is because he has gout. Since gout is exacerbated by weight-bearing exercises like running, a spin class is the best aerobic exercise for him to do. Because you adjust the tension on your bike pace in a spin class, they're well suited for a wide variety of fitness levels.
