The lats, being so large and expansive, respond well to both freeweights and machines. As a matter of fact, you can probably work them much harder with machines than with free weights, because you're able to use a little more weight and not have to concentrate on form quite as much as you would with free weights. However, it is still important to use both, especially when you concentrate on the smaller back muscles like the rhomboids.
