Prostate Enlargement Related Prob lems

Many men, who are understandably concerned about prostate cancer, ask whether there is anything they can do to reduce their odds of contracting it. What follows is my personal opinion and is not meant to suggest or guarantee that it is a cure for those that already suffer from prostate enlargement-related probiems i The most common opinions today about prostate cancer is that it's accidentaliy contracted due to a genetic predisposition. The current consensus in the mainstream medical community is that dehydro-testosterone (DHT), the so-called bad testosterone, is what causes prostate cancer. DHT is a derivative of testosterone that binds to the androgen receptors inside the prostate gland, and is believed to be what makes the cells proliferate and become cancerous. This may be true, but I strongly believe it's not the whole truth. In fact, I question this theory outright. Aging is correlated with lower testosterone production. Moreover, aging accelerates the conversion of testosterone...

The Warrior Diet as First Defense Against Prostate Related Problems

I believe the Warrior Diet may help prevent prostate cancer since the long, daily period of undereating (controlled fasting) helps the liver detoxify all these chemicals and estrogenic derivatives. Ingesting live (raw) fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, which are loaded with live nutrients, helps the liver detoxify for much of each day. To sum up, if you detoxify daily, eat the foods recommended, and minimize consumption of estrogenic foods and substances, I believe you will stand a far greater chance of keeping yourself healthy and avoiding prostate problemsi

What Happens After Testosterone Molecules Leave Receptors

After a testosterone (or AAS) molecule has bonded with an androgen receptor-site and delivered its message, it returns to the blood stream. It can either contact other receptor-sites and do it all again, or it can be changed by enzymic reactions into other compounds such as estrogen, androstenediol, etc., or converted into ineffective molecules which are then excreted though urine. The testosterone molecule can also be converted into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT has a higher affinity (attraction) to receptor-sites than testosterone. DHT has strong androgenic characteristics and weak anabolic qualities for the most part. In fact, DHT is about 5-times as androgenic as testosterone. It also loves sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and prostate tissue. This means more acne and oily skin, hair loss on the scalp, and potential growth of prostate tissue if there is an excess of estrogen and the 5-LO enzyme present. The good news is that DHT improves muscle hardness and cannot be aromatized...

Reported Characteristics

Side effects such as increased liver values (toxicity) usually returned to normal within a short period of time after use was discontinued. High blood pressure, elevated heart rates, gyno, heavy water retention, and acne were all frequent reported negative side effects of Methandrostenlone use. Some literature on this drug supports DHT- like activity. Finasteride usually prevented this effect as well as possible prostate enlargement. Dianabol heavily suppresses natural testosterone production within only 10 days after continuous administration begins (dose dependent). Most note a sense of well being during use of this drug. Significant strength and weight loss follows discontinued

Supplements That Increase Muscle Gain

If you are thinking of taking mega doses of these products, be aware that prolonged periods of higher than normal levels of testosterone can cause side effects such as increased hair loss for those with a family history of male pattern baldness, enlarged prostate, impotence and acne due to increased oil gland activity. Another point you need to know about most prohormones is that a portion of the testosterone is converted to estrogen. The first prohormone on the market, Androstenedione, is notorious for this. This product can be converted it into estrogen much easier than into testosterone. Elevated estrogen levels in men will cause increased sensitivity and enlargement of the breast and nipple tissue. The medical term for this is gynecomastia, while the bodybuilder slang for this is bitch tits.

What does the research have to say

The researchers found that EGCG, (considered to be the most powerful catachin in green tea), significantly reduced testosterone levels, estradiol, leptin, insulin, insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), LH, glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides They also found that the EGCG, but not other catachins, reduced the growth of the prostate, uterus, and ovary in the rats.

For Maximum Anabolic Impact

Any medication, drug, or substance that inhibits the conversion of testosterone into DHT (such as prostate and hair loss-related drugs) may adversely affect steroid-related anabolic actions on muscle tissue and may decrease libido and impair sexual performance. Overall, testosterone and DHT play a critical role in growth, potency, and fertility.

Fighting Allergies and Asthma

Drugs that counteract your natural histamines are called, not surprisingly, antihistamines. There's a lot of different kinds, including many you can buy over the counter in any drugstore. The long lists of cautions and side effects on these drug labels are more than a little scary. Most antihistamines can make you dangerously drowsy. If you have a health problem such as high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney problems, prostate disease, or lung disease, you shouldn't take them. Recently Seldane (terfenadine) has been taken off the market because it caused heart problems for some people.

What does the research say

As alluded to above, not all estrogens are created equal. There are different forms of estrogen in the human body. Estradiol is the primary form, and can be metabolized in different ways. Certain metabolites, 16-alpha-hy-droxyestrone and 4-hydroxyestrone, are thought to be responsible for the carcinogenic effects of estrogen, most notably in breast cancer, but have also been implicated in prostate cancer risk. An alternate metabolic pathway involving the formation of 2-hydroxyestrone, however, carries no such risk. In fact, 2-hydroxyestrone is viewed as being protective against certain cancers, and is known as the good estrogen.

Hormonelike compounds

Like natural or synthetic estrogens, daidzein and genistein hook onto sensitive spots in reproductive tissue (breast, ovary, uterus, prostate) called estrogen receptors. But phytoestrogens have weaker estrogenic effects than natural or synthetic estrogens. It takes about 100,000 molecules of daidzein or genistein

What is it supposed to do

Beta-sitosterol has a long list of claims, such as immune support, anti-inflammatory effects pain relief, as a treatment for benign prostate enlargement benign prostatic hyperplasia, cancer prevention, and as a way to treat high cholesterol levels in humans. In the sports nutrition arena, the claim has been that, due to its structural similarities to cholesterol and other compounds, it builds muscle, since cholesterol is a precursor to anabolic hormones such as testosterone. Some companies selling this compound claimed that, like cholesterol, it's a precursor for testosterone, while others have claimed it has direct effects beyond conversion to testosterone. Finally, the plant sterol is claimed to prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is a potent androgen associated with various problems, such as male pattern baldness and prostate enlargement.

Testosterone Boosting Supplements Not Recommended for Teenagers

The efficacy of some of these supplements is still under debate by some of the experts in the field, but in my opinion as a competitive athlete I have seen an edge by using them. Also, I would like to mention that by increasing your hormonal levels you may experience some acne and slightly increased aggression. Finally, if you have a propensity for male pattern baldness and or an increased prostate you should monitor these things if you still decide to use some of these products.

Ounces raw without skin or bone

That mice with low leptin levels have faster metabolisms and are able to burn fat faster than animals with higher leptin levels. Mayo Clinic researchers studying the diets of two African tribes found that the tribe that ate fish frequently had leptin levels nearly five times lower than the tribe that primarily ate vegetables. A bonus benefit Researchers in Stockholm studied the diets of more than 6,000 men and found that those who ate no fish had three times the risk of prostate cancer than those who ate it regularly. It's the omega-3's that inhibit prostate cancer growth.

Wonder herb or wondrous scam

Saw Palmetto extract 1 is often recommended as a cure all for everything from MPB hair loss 2 to benign prostate enlargement BPH 3 to gynecomastia. Will Saw Palmetto deliver this wonderful cure for all that bother men from their hair to their nether region Stop hair loss, prevent bitch tits, and fix prostate problems Sounds like damn fine stuff, but is it true

Some interesting notes

*Arachidonic acid is found in red meat in fairly high levels. Unfortunately the activity of an enzyme called 5-Lipooxygenase (5-LO) upon arachidonic acid in the presence of estrogen has been linked to prostate cancer. An interesting finding is that inhibition of the 5-LO enzyme triggers massive apoptosis (programmed cell death) in human prostate cancer cells. Ginger seems to inhibit this enzyme and omega-3 fatty acids have a protective effect against prostate cancer.

SP as an antiinflammatory

What this tell us is that one of the mechanisms of SP may be in fact as a potent antiinflammatory rather than as a blocker of testosterone to DHT. Interestingly enough, it has been shown that infiltration of the prostate by inflammatory cells is a key aetiologic factor involved in the development of BPH. Translated, the immune system is involved in benign prostate enlargment. Actually the immune system also appears to be involved in MPB and that's an interesting angle being pursued by researchers in the field. People interested in the topic can read my article Hair today, gone tomorrow at my web site Brinkzone.com

SP as an anti estrogen

Several studies have suggested SP may exert some type of anti-estrogenic effect on prostate tissues. However, and this is a huge however, it does not tell the entire story. Why I'm getting to it, but first we have to do a little side track into how So where the hell is Brink going with this and what on Gods earth does it mean to the hard training bodybuilder you ask. Here is the rub Just because SP might have some anti-estrogenic effects on the prostate does not mean it will prevent gyno, bodyfat increases, etc. known to occur from increased levels of estrogen (whether from andro products, steroid use, age, etc.) in all tissues. Companies or people that say other wise are misleading you. There is no research to date that shows SP can prevent gyno or any other estrogen related problems athletes are concerned about except possibly in prostate tissue. I realize it took me a while to get to that point but the reader can appreciate the fact that without the proper background you would be...

Secondary Mechanisms And Factors

Many AAS are susceptible to a percentage of enzymic reduction to either DHT or a metabolite derivative of DHT. This is the result of a susceptible AAS molecule encountering the enzyme 5-alfa-reductase. The majority of 5-alfa-reductase is found in sex-specific tissues such as hair follicles, and prostate cells. Some does exist in muscle and the vascular system of course.

The bottom line on SP for Mpb Bph and gyno

Regarding BPH, that's where Saw Palmetto looks far more promising. Studies using Saw Palmetto extract have shown positive effects on BPH symptoms. Though it is unclear exactly how Saw Palmetto improves the symptoms of BPH, there appears to be enough data and clinical evidence in favor of Saw Palmetto as a treatment for men who suffer from an enlargement of the prostate that is not cancerous. So, if you have BPH, SP does in fact look like worthwhile treatment and that has been confirmed by real world observations.

Cycles And Effects An Opinion

Male prostate enlargement (growth) is possible but as of yet has not been statistically confirmed. However, it stands to reason that since some AAS convert to, or are derivatives of DHT and aromatize, that this is quite possible. It should be noted however that the connection between DHT and prostate tissue growth seems to require estrogen elevation above normal and testosterone level reduction to occur as well. Athletes over 40 years of age were wiser avoid high androgenic AAS that aromatize heavily, instead opting for nandrolones, Oxandrolone, Andriol, and Primobolan Depot (and enduring regular rectal exams). During AAS use, Finasteride (Proscar) was often considered.

What about carcinogens

High fat diets have traditionally been a focus of cancer research. It's believed fat may be implicated in colon, breast, and prostate cancer. But research in this area remains largely unclear at this time. In fact, many studies have minimized the importance of fat as a cancer-causing source especially in the breast cancer area.

Bottomline Bodybuilding

Beta Sitosterol has been shown to improve conditions of benign prostate hypertrophy and to lower cholesterol. This substance may be one of the most highly supplemented herbs, and with good reason -- it does what it's supposed to do in that it reduces the symptoms of benign prostate hypertrophy. Saw Palmetto works and I've used it and recommended it. The way in which it works, however, may be deleterious to those who need it the most. Confused Stick with me a moment. Saw Palmetto works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is what allows for the production of DHT (Dyhydrotestosterone). That's good, right We've been hearing for years how DHT is the bad testosterone and the culprit for everything from prostate enlargement to baldness. Well, not only may that not be the case, but it looks like everyone has been barking up the wrong tree. It's true, that reducing DHT will also reduce inflammation of the prostate, not caused by an infection (prostatitis). But in doing so there are...

Important note on the ECA stack

Under no circumstances should the recommended dose of ECA be exceeded. Any negative reactions beyond the normal stimulant effect indicates that the ECA stack should not be taken. Additionally, as a potent CNS stimulant, individuals with any type of preexisting heart condition should not use this combination of compounds. Also, individuals with thyroid or prostate problems should not use ECA. Individuals taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) should not use ECA.

Bill Barad Bodybuilder

First, I'd like to make my position clear, concerning the anabolic hormones or 'tissue drugs', as you call them. I'm neither-for-or against their use, as far as the general public is concerned. Each individual is a complex combination of innumerable factors, both physical and psychological, and certainly no one can say truthfully that anything is good for EVERYONE. These hormones are contraindicated in certain diseased conditions of the prostate and liver. However, under normal condition, I feel that they are very useful and beneficial for the average bodybuilder when used with discretion.

Maintaining Strength Levels

During AAS use, hair loss from the scalp and swelling of the prostate gland (androgenic-alopecia and benign prostate hypertrophy) were a concern. If an individual was genetically predisposed to balding, AAS did obviously speed things along in many cases. DHT is about 5 times as androgenic as testosterone and receptor-sites in the scalp and prostate gland have a high affinity to DHT. Normally the body produces DHT, in part, as a hormone involved in sex drive and it aids in achieving and maintaining an erection. In bodybuilding DHT and its derivatives were used for their distinct hardening effect upon the musculature. The latter is similar to the way Nolvadex inhibits estrogenic activity. Finasteride causes somewhere around a 70 reduction in the levels of both circulating DHT and DHT activity at specific sites in the body such as the scalp and prostate gland. treatment for benign prostate hypertrophy (enlarged prostate gland) which is usually said to be caused by excess DHT activity. He...

Using supplements as insurance

Taking supplements may reduce the likelihood of some types of cancer and other diseases. After analyzing data from a survey of 871 men and women, epidemiologists at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center found that people taking a daily multivitamin for more than ten years were 50 percent less likely to develop colon cancer. In addition, selenium supplements seem to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and vitamin C seems to lower the risk of cataracts.

Put Your Back into It

Nearly 80 of adults deal with back pain some time in their lives. Aside from ruptured disks, backache may result from muscle strain, build-up of acidic byproducts, stress, poor posture, calcium deficiency, kidney, bladder and prostate problems, etc. There are many causes for back pain as there are healthy alternatives. In his wonderful guidebook Prescription for Nutritional Healing* Dr. Balch gives simple, healthful suggestions.

Unexpected bonuses

Food is a package deal containing vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber, plus a cornucopia of as-yet-unidentified substances called phytochemicals (phyto plant, chemicals well, chemicals) that may be vital to your continuing good health. Think of lycopene, the red pigment in tomatoes that recently was found to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Think of genistein and daidzein, the estrogen-like substances in soybeans that appear to reduce your risk of heart disease. Who knows what else is hiding in your apples, peaches, pears, and plums Do you want to be the only one on your block who misses out on these goodies Of course not. For more about the benefits of phytochemicals, see Chapter 12.

Estandrone

The product was created with the intended use of treatment for various conditions resulting from menopause in women. Female athletes used the product to obtain the effects of testosterone while utilizing the somewhat protective qualities from virilization of estrogens. Males who are prone to prostate problems, hair loss, and serious acne use reported the product allowed them to reap the rapid mass gains of testosterone use while minimizing these effects. *These individuals (Males) are in error. Estrogens have been shown to have a growth stimulating effect upon prostate tissue also.

My Favorite

There have been quite a few studies with this plant. The effects of eurycoma were studied on the libido of sexually experienced male rats after dosing them with 200, 400 and 800 mg kg body weight twice daily for 10 days. Results showed that eurycoma produced a dose-dependent increase in mounting frequency of the treated animals. Further studies also showed that eurycoma promoted the growth of both ventral prostate and seminal vesicles. (Human studies showed the response at much lower dosages).

Androstenedione

Even though androstenedione may benefit athletes, it is dangerous and potentially deadly. (36) If this substance does increase testosterone levels, side effects may occur that are similar to those associated with androgenic-anabolic steroids, including kidney and liver damage, acne, premature baldness, enlarged prostate, reduced sperm count, and heightened aggression. (37) Androstenedione may cause testicular atrophy, reduce beneficial HDL cholesterol, disrupt liver metabolism, and cause problems in the endocrine system.

Youre a man

Men who take a daily supplement of 200 micrograms selenium seem to cut their risk of prostate cancer by two-thirds. The selenium supplement also produces an overall drop in cancer mortality, plus a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer in both men and women.

Stinging Nettle

The anti-aromatazing properties of this herb are probably due to its ability to bind to the aromataze enzyme, and thus neutralize it. Recent studies suggest the plant may also be useful in treating enlarged prostate. When you take stinging nettle, follow the dosage recommended on the bottle. Nettle may also be a natural aid for women who suffer from estrogen-related stubborn fat. Due to its high-lignan content, this herb may help women block the effect of estradiol.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants also slow the normal wear-and-tear on body cells, so some researchers noted that a diet rich in plant foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans) seems likely to reduce the risk of heart disease and maybe reduce the risk of some kinds of cancer. For example, consuming lots of lycopene (the red carotenoid in tomatoes) has been linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer as long as the tomatoes are mixed with a dab of oil, which makes the lycopene easy to absorb.

Protein Sources

May reduce the risk of hormone-dependent cancers (breast, prostate, etc), and other cancers as well. Soy's primary health benefits include reducing high cholesterol and easing the symptoms of menopause (due to the fact that it contains estrogen like substances called phytoestrogens). Soy has also been shown to help with osteoporosis by building up bone mass. Because of this, I like to recommend 1 serving of soy protein per day for women but only for its health benefits. However, in the muscle building department, I don't feel that soy is very useful, especially for men. First of all, its BV value is a distant 49, and second of all, since it has estrogen like substances, it could potentially reduce the utilization of testosterone through the binding of phytoestrogens to the testosterone receptors.

Phytochemicals

Higher testosterone levels are good for adding LBM, minimizing body fat, having a healthy libido, etc. but can have negative consequences too. Male pattern baldness, acne, oily skin, and benign prostatic hyperplasia are all potential consequences of increased testosterone due to conversion to DHT. So it's not surprising that there would be a market for compounds that might be anabolic without producing androgenic effects.

DHT Can Work for

DHT is the most potent testosterone derivative, which positively affects potency. Moreover, DHT cannot penetrate the prostate gland from the blood. Only free testosterone (testosterone that is not bound to GHGB gonadal hormone-binding globulins) can penetrate the prostate gland Only once it's then inside may it convert into DHT, and then, with estrogen or prolactin, possibly cause prostate enlargement, or even cancer. Drugs such as Proscar and Propecia work to reduce blood DHT and therefore to alleviate prostate enlargement symptoms (Proscar) and protect against hair loss (Propecia). However, both Proscar and Propecia have side effects, including impotence. So, following this line of thinking, the question is What happens when blood DHT is increased Stay with me now. In an absurd way, by increasing blood DHT, testosterone levels decline. Therefore, the less testosterone penetrates the prostate, the less DHT is produced inside the gland and, as a result,...

Conclusion

Uptake of testosterone and DHT into the prostate, blocks estrogen at the receptor, or actually inhibits certain pro inflammatory enzymes responsible for the etiology and formation of BPH, is not certain at this time. Perhaps it works by all those mechanisms. Regardless, if you have an enlarged prostate, SP could really help. As for gyno and hair loss, I leave it to the reader to decide. It's your money

Proscar Finasteride

An inhibitor usually prevents something from being manufactured or converted, rather than simply blocking its receptor-sites. In the case of Proscar, the drug inhibits 5-alfa reductase enzyme which is the enzyme responsible for testosterone (nortestosterone converts to NOR-DHT) conversion to DHT (dihydrotestosterone). As you know by now, DHT is one of the hormones associated with accelerated balding and prostate enlargement. It is also responsible for many of the virilizing effects from androgenic steroids. (Like it also hardens musculature)

Its Soy Good for

Soybean foods such as soy milk, tofu, and miso may be the best foods around for protecting women against breast cancer and relieving the symptoms of menopause. They may also help protect men against prostate cancer and they help keep everyone's cholesterol down. Although we think of estrogen as the main female hormone, men make it in small amounts as well. Estrogen may play a role in triggering prostate cancer.

Cancer

Consistent exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Exercise has also been shown to help people who have undergone chemotherapy minimize the debilitating side effects. Men and woman have their own particular concerns when it comes to cancer. For men, there is an avoidable but predictable pattern that we see again and again. The combination of aging, being sedentary, and an increase in the percentage of body fat (along with a decrease in lean body mass) alters hormone levels and leads to an increase in the risk of prostate cancer.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto has proven to be an effective supplement to help treat those who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Saw Palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT. It also inhibits DHT's activation through cellular binding. Moreover, recent studies show that Saw Palmetto possesses a strong anti-estrogenic effect. Estrogen accelerates prostate enlargement by inhibiting the elimination of DHT. However, according to these studies, Saw Palmetto possesses anti-androgenic activity, which means it may reduce the action of testosterone. Saw Palmetto is still an open issue. While it seems to be an effective natural aid for prostate enlargement-related problems, it may, at the same time, reduce sex drive.

Hair Loss Treatment

DHT shortens the hair cycle and miniaturizes scalp follicles. Recently, two isoenzymes of 5a-reductase have been identified in human tissue. The type 1 isoenzyme is found in scalp skin, whereas 5a-reductase type 2 is the predominant form in prostate. Differences in pH optima, substrate Km (it regulates the rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction) and sensitivity to inhibitors can distinguish these isoenzymes. PROSCAR f finasteride) was introduced in 1989 and has demonstrated few adverse effects. Such effects occur in fewer than 5 of patients and usually relate to decreased libido and impotence. Up to a 25 reduction in semen volume can be expected in some patients without any changes in sperm counts, motility, or morphologic features. Finasteride lowers serum levels of prostate-specific antigen, a laboratory test used to monitor benign prostatic hypertrophy and screen for prostate cancer, since elevated prostate-specific antigen levels occur in both benign prostatic hypertrophy and...

Thyroid Drugs

I will remind you of this several times, but PSA level test were important. The normal reference range is 0.0-4.0 ng ml. The lower the better. By the way, different countries and labs will use slightly different reference ranges on any testing protocol. A PSA level test indicates the risks of prostate cancer among other bad things. If the level is high, DHT (Dehydrotestosterone) and estrogen together can trigger growth. Recent studies have often sited the 5-LO enzyme as the mediator for BPH and prostate cancer.

Cancer And Diet

As if it wasn't bad enough that the responsibility for coronary heart disease was laid at the doorstep of dietary fat, fat has also become a prime suspect in colon, breast and prostate cancer. There is even less validity to these claims than the fat heart disease link. In fact, a number of studies have cast doubt on any dietary fat cancer association. Recent research on colon cancer found there to be no link between the consumption of red meat or total or saturated fat in either sex with the cancer.3 Another found the existing evidence linking fat and prostate cancer to be inconclusive.4 Likewise, several studies of breast cancer and fat intake have shown little support for a connection.5,6,7. Other studies have pointed directly at bodyfat and overall weight, and not dietary fat, as prime contributors to prostate11,12,13 and breast cancer.14,15 With the high carb diet laying down so much more fat than the high fat diet, we might be wiser to begin some study of high carbohydrate diet...

The GI and Health

Epidemiological evidence suggests that diets rich in high glycemic index glycemic load carbohydrates are risk factors for a wide variety of other conditions. High GI diets increase the risk of macular degeneration, gallstone disease, and colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers.

Pygeum

It's interesting to note that certain substances in pygeum, such as n-docosanol (a triterpene), significantly reduces serum prolactin leveis. As noted, prolactin increases the uptake of testosterone and increases the conversion to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inside the prostate gland. Clinical trials and numerous studies support the fact that pygeum effectively reduces the symptoms of BPH
