A new magic pill is developed each day promising to shed pounds from your waistline. These fad workouts and diet supplements all target the greatest weakness of the human race, laziness. Everyone wants to get in shape without sweat or sacrifice. Research indicates that approximately one-half of Americans are overweight. Billions of dollars are spent each year on weight-reduction products and services. Despite such expenditures, a large portion of the population continues to live obese. The combination of obesity and harsh, fad diets jeopardizes the health and well being of a large portion of the population.
Barnum was the founder to the phrase, There is a sucker born every minute. This was true in his day, and still holds true today. Let me tell you how crazy the diet and exercise industry is. A few years ago, I had a meeting with a very prominent publisher of an exercise magazine. Over a business lunch, he told me, Chris, if you want to make money, you should write a diet book, but not just any old diet and exercise book. Take an odd approach, make it really gimmicky and outrageous. Promise overnight transformations, promise instant results, promise the reader that this diet is top secret, one used by Hollywood stars and top professional bodybuilders. Tell the reader you consult with Pro Athletes, movie stars, even politicians. As I grew skeptical and as my feeling of respect for this individual suddenly began to change as he spoke, he added, The crazier the promises sound, the more people will buy. The buying public is just so damn naive, confused and desperate, they'll try...
For a muscle to contract, it must receive a signal from the brain that tells it what to do. These signals come from nerve cells called neurons. A neuron and the muscle fibers it controls are collectively known as a motor unit. Muscle fibers and motor units are generally classified into two types, slow twitch (type I) and fast twitch (type II), with fast twitch further divided into type IIa and type IIb. Slow-twitch motor units are used when low force production is required, and they can work for extended periods of time, whereas fast-twitch motor units are capable of greater force production than slow-twitch, but require greater stimulation before they will work, and fatigue much more rapidly. Think of slow-twitch fibers as cheap labor that will work all day but never produce quickly, while fast-twitch fibers need more money before they'll come to work, and they won't stay long but they'll get a lot of work done while they're there.
