Allie, a twenty-four-year-old actress, came into my program because she was overweight and was suffering from some quality-of-life issues. Her doctor had told her that she was borderline hypothyroid but had left her untreated. I could see that she had all of the classic symptoms of hypothy-roidism she was overweight, felt tired all the time, and had trouble concentrating and sleeping at night. There are two common syndromes associated with low levels of T3 which need to be differentiated from one another. Hypothyroidism is a disease characterized by higher than normal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and lower levels of T3 and T4. The symptoms of this disease include fatigue and a low metabolic rate. The decrease in T3 due to hypothyroidism must be contrasted to the decrease seen during dieting or carbohydrate restriction. Low levels of T3 with normal levels of T4 and TSH (as seen in ketogenic dieting) is known clinically as euthyroid stress syndrome (ESS) and is not associated with the metabolic derangements seen in hypothyroidism (1). The drop in T3 does not appear to be linked to a drop in metabolic rate during a ketogenic diet (17,52).

Hypothyroidism means that the thyroid is underactive, and hyper-thyroidism means that it is overactive. An enlarged thyroid gland is often called a goiter. Sometimes an inflammation of the thyroid gland (Hashimoto's disease) will cause significant enlargement of the gland. Since hyperthyroidism is not as prevalent and its symptoms are fairly easy to spot bulging eyes, racing heart, profuse sweating, nervousness, and jittery feelings most of the time I will focus on helping you to recognize if you might be suffering from the great metabolic shutdown associated with hypothyroidism.
While most of the endocrinologists with whom I consulted for this book told me that there was no natural cure for hypothyroidism, they were all in agreement that a good program of exercise could help prevent thyroid problems and would certainly help to strengthen the effects of any thyroid medication. First of all, I should say that far fewer people suffer from a low HGH than hypothyroidism. In case you're wondering, you don't need to be suffering from thyroid disease or dysfunction to experience some of the negative effects of a sluggish thyroid. Even a healthy thyroid can afford to be coaxed to work at an optimum level in order keep the metabolism running as efficiently as possible and there are several ways of accomplishing this.
As it turns out, thyroid levels affect blood flow to fat cells significantly. Low thyroid (which is common among women and, I suspect, among genetically average men) decreases blood flow to fat cells and normal or even high thyroid levels improve it. A few patients claim that emotional factors or hunger aggravate their condition. In many cases alcohol has an obvious beneficial effect. Some patients believe that they are more susceptible to paramyotonia when they have a cold. Paramyotonia may become more severe during pregnancy, so that the leg muscles stiffen even under warm conditions. Cytomel (T-3) was layered in beginning 6-8 weeks before a show. This was plenty for most beasts, unless they had gotten too fat during mass phases. This simple questionnaire should help you to understand how metaboli-cally fit you are. If you answer no to all of the questions, you most likely have an efficient metabolism. If you answer yes to three questions, your metabolism is probably only moderately efficient and you would benefit from changing your eating and exercise patterns. If you check off more than three yes answers, your metabolism has probably slowed to the point where you are overfat. Besides changing your eating and exercise patterns, you should consider having a resting metabolic test performed by your physician, especially if you also checked off a significant number of items in the Signs and Symptoms of Hypothyroidism questionnaire in chapter 6.

Synthroid is a man-made synthetically manufactured version of T-4 L-thyroxine. The average person produces about 76 MCG d of T-4 L-thyroxine which is then converted by the liver into the more active T-3 L-triiodothyronine. This is true of the oral T-4 L-thyroxine medications as well. The average conversion rate of T-4 to T-3 is about 30-33 MCG.
