Better Brakes

I am sure this question has been addressed, but I am new to the hobby and don't know where to look. I don't want to waste my money and time. I have a '65 Formula S Barracuda with a 360 engine. I want to change to disk brakes on the front. The car is for limited street use and will never be raced. What is the "best bang for the buck" swap? I see advertising in magazines that offer kits ($600) that use much of the original parts. Is this the way to go for my purposes or do you have different suggestions. Thanks.

You get all-new parts that are ready to swap in place. I would suggest finding a company that has a brake system in your price range. Make sure to specify the car you are working on and the factory brake arrangement to find a kit that works with your OE drum brake spindles.

The advantage of the leak-down test is that the air can be heard escaping, and with a careful exam, the source of the problem can be pinpointed. Most likely the over-revving led to valve float or lifter pump-up and valve to piston contact. This could have bent a valve or two, causing the engine to miss at idle. If the leak-down test indicates air escaping the carburetor, the intake valve on that cylinder is likely bent, while leakage through the exhaust indicates a damaged exhaust valve. If the engine has bent valves, it is important to make the repairs before continuing to run the engine, since the uneven force of the valve on the seat can actually cause the valve to break, dropping the valve and potentially destroying the engine.
