Nonnutritional supplements

20.133 One or a few of the current crop of vogue non-nutritional supplements will hang around for long enough to produce enough positive feedback to prolong sales, but nearly all of them will fall by the wayside as people discover that they do not work. Of course, this will happen only after a lot of money has been wasted money that could have been better spent on quality food. So the supplement manufacturers will have to come up with other products. Hence, in a few years from now, different supplements will be touted to those that are doing the rounds today.

How does a supplement become a supplement

The FDA regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering conventional foods and drug products (prescription and Over-the-Counter). Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that a dietary supplement is safe before it is marketed. FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe dietary supplement product after it reaches the market. Generally, manufacturers do not need to register with FDA nor get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements. Manufacturers must make sure that product label information is truthful and not misleading. FDA's post-marketing responsibilities include monitoring safety, e.g. voluntary dietary supplement adverse event reporting, and product information, such as labeling, claims, package inserts, and accompanying literature. The Federal Trade Commission regulates dietary supplement advertising. -Source The...

Why I Decided To Write This Manual

One point to always keep in mind is that your diet, workout program and nutritional supplements all work in synergy. They are good alone, but together they will propel you to your goal very quickly. This is where most people fail. They never have all three in place for any extended period of time. I did it for 12 weeks, and look what I accomplished.

How This Book Is Organized

Chapter 1 defines nutrition and its effects on your body. This chapter also tells you how to read a nutrition study and how to judge the value of nutrition information in newspapers, magazines, and on TV. Chapter 2 is a really clear guide to how your digestive system works to transform food and beverages into the nutrients you need to sustain a healthy body. Chapter 3 concentrates on calories, the energy factor in food and beverages. Chapter 4 tells you how much of each nutrient you need to stay in tiptop form. Chapter 5 details some of the rules on dietary supplements the pills, powders, and potions that add nutritional punch to your regular diet.

What Fasting Means on the Warrior Diet

On the Warrior Diet, the principle of fasting is based on not eating a full meal during the day. Since the Undereating Phase lasts for most of the day, you can consume certain live foods and should drink a lot of water. Naturally stimulating beverages, such as coffee and tea, are aliowed, and a few nutritional supplements are suggested. You must, however, minimize the amount of food to mostly live (raw) food, in the form of fruit and veggies and their natural juices and a small portion of protein if needed. This keeps your digestive system untaxed and continues to manipulate your hormones to the optimum balance. Choose your food and beverages carefuiiy, to accelerate detoxification. Processed carbs and sugars should be avoided during this phase, so as not to boost your insulin levels.

Checking the ingredient list

The FDA's new supplement labels must list all ingredients. The label for vitamin and mineral products must give you the quantity per nutrient per serving plus the DV (percentage daily value), the percentage of the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance). The listings for other dietary supplements, such as botanicals (herbs) and phytochemicals (see Chapter 12), must show the quantity per serving plus the part of the plant from which the ingredient is drawn (root, leaves, and so on). A manufacturer's own proprietary blend of two or more botanicals must list the weight of the total blend.

Checking the storage requirements

Even when you buy a product with the correct expiration date, it may be less effective if you don't keep it in the right place. Some supplements must be refrigerated the rest you need to store, like any food product, in a cool, dry place. Avoid putting dietary supplements in a cabinet above the stove or refrigerator true, the fridge is cold inside, but the motor pulsing away outside emits heat. Nutrition Labeling for Dietary Supplements A DIETARY SUPPLEMENT

The quest for longevity

As we grow older, we naturally desire to grow older still. In this pursuit, we associate life with health, and health with fitness. So, it seems natural to inquire as to what exercises, what nutritional supplements, and even what drugs are available to aid us in our goal of living longer. It should

International Sports Sciences Association ISSA

The ISSA provides many services to its certified members, such as unlimited technical support, free business forms, listing on their online Trainer Locator, and discounts on liability insurance, nutritional supplements, and fitness products. Cost for certification is 595, which includes all texts, a video, study guide, and admission to a weekend seminar.

Prioritize Your Priorities

Of course, we live in a pill popping society, which tends to shift the blame away from personal responsibility and toward external factors such as nutritional supplements. Obviously, blaming oneself just doesn't fly in a society full of apologists and excuse makers Nevertheless, those who are willing to learn from mistakes and hardships will eventually prevail if they apply their acquired knowledge and if they are willing to make sacrifices.

Why is it so hard Part

After last chapter, you're thinking one of two things. Either you can't wait to get into the nuts and bolts of this diet, or you're still not convinced. I mean, you can open any of the muscle magazines (or should we call them supplement catalogs ) and see any number of diet plans, training programs, or nutritional supplements all of which promise everything I told you this diet could accomplish. So how come I'm right and they're wrong

Step 3 Get Proper Supplementation

Michael Murray suggests a basic supplementation program for thyroid health. He writes I am a firm believer in building a strong foundation. In that goal, there are three key dietary supplements that I recommend to provide a strong foundation for a proper nutritional supplement plan

Why have you never published your findings on the various benefits of the Atkins Nutritional Approach in a scientific

Atkins Foundation sponsors further research in all aspects of controlled carbohydrate nutrition. The Foundation is funded through Atkins Nutritionals Inc., our food products and nutritional supplements company. ANI, as I call it, has the added benefit of helping to supply the demand we now see of people seeking controlled carbohydrate foods. All of our products are developed to support the Atkins Nutritional Principles. Interestingly, our products have encouraged other food companies to develop additional new products.

Three Links in a Chain

Where's the product Where's the seminar The book The e-Book I can't tell you what a hard time I have getting trainees to take time off. They've all been saturated with the propaganda of 3 times per week and supplements will fix your problems. But the honest truth is that very often three weeks of staying out of the gym completely will put far more muscle on you than nine more workouts and 200 worth of nutritional supplements will

Myth If you ueat right you dont need to take supplements Fact Studies show many of us do need to take supplements

Despite what some old-school dietitians and other experts might tell you, there really is a very sound, scientific basis for supplementation. In fact, even the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recognized the role of nutritional supplements in physically active people's nutrition plans.

An Introduction to Supplements

With the vast array of nutritional supplements and erogenic aids on the market it is no wonder that even many experienced bodybuilders and athletes are baffled as to which are effective. Discussions on supplements are based solely on my professional opinion and experience, but I have taken into account experimental, epidemiological and anecdotal evidence, including my own usage. The world of nutritional supplements is vast, but remember, they are what they say, i.e. 'nutritional supplements' - they merely serve to 'supplement' a diet which must already be optimal. You do not need any supplements to build a great physique, but they are an extremely useful and effective way of improving your gains. Supplements do not 'work' as such, they are just a way of optimising your nutrition. Nutritional supplements may be based on a variety of ingredients form varied sources, but in order to be classified as 'supplements' they must either be derivatives of a naturally occurring substance in the...

What Are We Talking About

Whenever I launch into a discussion about supplements, I find it helpful to draw clear lines about the category of supplements I'm talking about. At this point, I'm not discussing dietary supplements that are intended to provide a certain daily vitamin or mineral level. The importance of that type of supplement was pointed out earlier in this chapter. Nor am I addressing the myriad of pharmaceuticals and other medical preparations that are prescribed by doctors for their patients who need them.

Individual Results Vary

Not everyone who uses dietary supplements will enjoy results that are identical to those that some friend or family member has told them about, but that's to be expected. After all, we're all different. The outcome of supplement use will vary according to such things as genetic factors your body's ability to digest, absorb, and utilize the particular supplements you ingest your current state of health and your past and current dietary habits.

Natural Metabolic Enhancers

In the dietary supplement market there has been a pronounced emphasis on metabolic enhancement and weight loss. As a result, creating new natural metabolic enhancers and appetite suppressants have been the main focus of the natural product industry. We will now examine the ingredients most commonly associated with weight loss and metabolic enhancement.

People Who Suffer From Overacidity

Those who suffer from overacidity, which is the case for the majority of people, should consume more live and cooked veggies, since they are alkalizing, and avoid all vinegars. I also recommend consuming foods that are high in minerals, such as miso, which is made from nonpasteurized, fermented soybeans. Miso is a wonderful alkalizer that's rich in minerals and organic sodium. It can be consumed as a soup or as a sauce. Another way to instantly alkalize the body is supplementing with good quality highly ionized minerals, such as coral-derived minerals. (For more on this, go to the Warrior Diet Nutritional Supplements chapter.)

Supplements for Everyone

The more I learn about nutritional supplements, the more I discover nutritional components that can help nearly everyone. With the increasing depletion of nutrients in our soil, there is simply no way we can ensure that we get all we require from food. In fact, I consider individualized prescription of vitanutrients programs to be one of the two pillars of nutritional In this chapter, however, all I want to do is provide adequate nutritional support for Induction. When you opt to become a lifetime Atkins follower (notice, I didn't say if), you will have to familiarize yourself with the content of Chapter 23. But for now, these are the nutritional supplements you should be taking during Induction

Im approaching menopause

Information about the specific vitamin requirements of older women is as hard to find as, well, information about the specific vitamin requirements about older men. It's enough to make you wonder what's going on with the people who set the RDAs. Don't they know that everyone gets older Right now, just about all anybody can say for sure about the nutritional needs of older women is that they require extra calcium to stem the natural loss of

Creatine effects on the function of healthy and damaged brains

Affect thousands of people each year. The real tragedy however is that much of the damage to the brain is not caused by the immediate injury, but due to cell death caused by ischemia (a lack of blood flow and oxygen to tissues) and free radical damage oxidative stress. The ability of a cell to do work is directly related to its ATP status and the health of the mitochondria. Heart tissue, neurons in the brain and other highly active tissues are very sensitive to this system. Even small changes in ATP can have profound effects on the tissues' ability to function properly, which can cause damage and or death for the cell. Of all the nutritional supplements available to us currently, creatine appears to be the most effective for maintaining or raising ATP levels. Recent studies have shown that creatine affords significant neuroprotection against ischemic and oxidative insults. One recent study called Dietary supplement creatine protects against traumatic brain injury (Ann Neurol. 2000 Nov...

Warriors Stubborn Fat Burner A Natural Supplement to Block Estrogen Rel ated Stubborn

A couple of years ago I created a formula that is a potent combination of flavones and herbs that together help rid this fat by blocking the estrogen effect and deactivating alpha receptors on the fat cells. More on this can be found in the Warrior Nutritional Supplements chapter

What Else Is Recommended

An increasing number of experts, including many doctors, suggest that people can benefit from dietary supplements, particularly if they are taken in conjunction with a nutritionally sound diet and exercise regimen. One thing that's important to keep in mind, however, is that both the amount of weight loss and the risk to health and safety will vary from one dietary supplement to another. What I advise my clients to do is to eat the foods rather than to just take vitamin supplements that contain the essential vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are needed for proper

Supplementation A Nononsense Guide To What To Take When To Take It And

The goal of the Anabolic Diet is to get you maximum growth. Exercise and training are, of course, the keys to opening the door to bodybuilding success. What the diet does is maximize the production of lean body mass built through training, while minimizing muscle breakdown and burning bodyfat. This is done by manipulating key hormones in the body to stimulate maximum anabolic drive and minimize the catabolic effects of exercise. To do this fully and get the optimum results, you'll need nutritional supplements. Many athletes realize that nutritional supplements can get them that extra edge they need over the competition. Unfortunately, they often have some very strange ideas about what works and what doesn't. In many cases, the only information available to them comes from the people who manufacture, distribute, and retail the supplements they buy and, guess what They're going to do everything they can to get you to buy their product.

Creatine safety issues fact or fiction

Fears over the safety of creatine are usually generated from some hysterical news report or poorly researched article. It's odd, but predictable that the media and conservative medical establishment have desperately tried to paint creatine as an inherently dangerous or poorly researched dietary supplement. The fact is, creatine may be the most extensively researched performance enhancing supplement of all time, with a somewhat astounding safety record. True to form, the don't confuse us with the facts media and anti-supplement conservative medical groups have had no problems ignoring the extensive safety data on creatine, or simply inventing safety worries where none exists.

Nutritional Ergogenic Agents

Taking performance-enhancing supplements is a personal choice. Table 14-1 lists some popular ergogenic agents grouped by type (identified in bold), the research findings, and the potential side effects. However, this list is not complete as new supplements enter the market regularly. This table is designed to educate you as a consumer. Many of the ergogenic agents listed are classified as nutritional supplements. When marketed as a nutritional supplement, these substances are not regulated by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Often this means that the performance claims and the risks associated with using these substances have not been thoroughly tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

I make a lot of enemies on this question. Let me say first that I really feel sorry for the honest supplement researchers who are trying to find valid ways to boost muscle growth. Because those good people are surrounded by 21st century snake-oil salesman who make outlandish claims using half truths. (This product supports muscle growth. Supports So does water. A tomato supports skin growth so will it help a burn victim ) Nutritional supplements are food. Period. However, I am not doing research in this area so if there is a useful product out there, I wouldn't necessarily know about it. My advice in examining nutritional supplements is to be as thoughtful and critical as you would of prescription drugs. After all, they cost about the same.

Better Late Than Never

I put Stan back on the Atkins program he had abandoned ten years before and prescribed nutritional supplements. I also gave him adjunctive therapy including EECP (see Twenty-First Century Diagnosis and Treatment' 'on pages 356-358). Naturally, I told him not to exert himself for a while. Stan tells the rest

Important note on the ECA stack

The ECA stack is a potent stimulant for the central nervous system (CNS) making it a potentially dangerous compound, especially if used indiscriminately. There are an increasing number of individuals reporting negative responses to ephedrine, and a handful of deaths have been attributed to the combination of ECA. While details of all of these negative reactions are not available, there is an increasing use of herbal ephedrine (MaHuang) in a variety of nutritional supplements. The risk of overdose, especially in herbal products which are not standardized, is a possibility. In general, the studies show good tolerance among subjects taking the ECA stack at the recommended dose (11,14,20).

Testosterone Boosters

Androstenedione is the next step up from DHEA in the chemical synthesis of testosterone. It has also been found naturally occurring in the pollen of Scotch pine trees, so may be classed as a dietary supplement. Reasonable amounts of androstenedione in the liver will be converted to testosterone, hence the theory that this supplement works. Clinical trials have shown raised testosterone levels with supplementation of androstenedione (Benendonk 1993), but there are no trials showing a direct link between androstenedione use and an increase in muscle strength or size, nor athletic performance in humans. People who I have known to use it have reported no notable effect, though many supplement 'gurus' report it to be better than its precursor DHEA.

The Athletes and Healthy Persons Food Pyramid By Will Brink

Furthermore, the standard pyramid ignores nutritional supplements altogether. In my view, that's an oversight and a mistake. No matter what a person's diet is like, supplements can and should play a role in optimal health and performance and therefore should be included. That's why I have given them their own position in what I consider a pyramid designed with optimal health and performance in mind.

Bill Barad Bodybuilder

There have been some adverse reactions due to misuse of these substances, to be sure. However, these reactions have been extremely rare and almost always associated with over dosage in individuals who were being treated medically for various conditions of poor health affecting the metabolism of these hormones. Besides, all known side effects of these substances are completely reversible upon reduction or withdrawal of dosage. There are far more people whose health was damaged by milk, eggs, wheat, vitamin supplements, etc. In fact, there is hardly a food or drink which hasn't been harmful to someone.

Using supplements as insurance

As you grow older, your appetite may decline and your sense of taste and smell may falter. If food no longer tastes as good as it once did, if you have to eat alone all the time and don't enjoy cooking for one, or if dentures make chewing difficult, you may not be taking in all the foods that you need to get the nutrients you require. Dietary supplements to the rescue But at least the FDA can require that premarket safety and or effectiveness info be displayed on foods and drugs. Unfortunately, the agency has no such power when it comes to dietary supplements. In 1994, Congress passed and President Clinton signed into law the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, which limits the FDA's control over dietary supplements. Under this law, The FDA can't i Require premarket tests to prove that supplements are safe and effective i Limit the dosage in any dietary supplement i Halt or restrict sales of a dietary supplement unless evidence shows that the product has caused illness or...

The Warrior Diet as First Defense Against Prostate Related Problems

Avoiding estrogenic foods and chemicals (see list) further helps the liver to detoxify. Finally, eating the foods I suggest in this book, and taking the right nutritional supplements, enables you to ingest the nutrients to help protect against the effects of estrogen whiie manipulating your hormonal balance to reach maximum metabolic efficiency.

Overestimating Training Knowledge

There are too many different factors and variables for you to feel as though you ever know it all. Let's take training your shoulders for example You could train them once a week or twice. You could even train them once every other week. You could train them very heavily, moderately, or lightly. You could put extra focus on the negative movement. You could perform a high number of repetitions or very few. You could train with a partner or alone. You could have a person spot you or use only as much weight as you can handle yourself. You could train in the morning, when your natural growth hormone is supposed to be at its highest, or later, when your closest rival is there to motivate you to take your training to the next level. You could train your shoulders after setting a contest date for one year from now, or 12 weeks, or after initiating a shoulder-building contest with your buddies. You could train your shoulders while on a highprotein, moderate-protein, or low-protein diet. You...

Some Practical Advice

The goals and principles of the two main phases of the diet, Undereating and Overeating, are at the beginning of their respective chapters. Warrior Meals and Recipes offers some great meals and recipes to prepare, and the Warrior Nutritional Supplements suggests some nutritional supplements you may want to take. Reading these chapters should make it easy for anyone to follow the Warrior Diet.

What is creatine

It is interesting to note that many of the most promising anti-aging nutrients such as CoQ10, NAD, acetyl-l-carnitine and lipoic acid are all taken to maintain the ability of the mitochondria to produce high energy compounds such as ATP and reduce oxidative stress. The ability of a cell to do work is directly related to its ATP status and the health of the mitochondria. Heart tissue, neurons in the brain and other highly active tissues are very sensitive to this system. Even small changes in ATP can have profound effects on the tissues' ability to function properly. Of all the nutritional supplements available to us currently, creatine appears to be the most effective for maintaining or raising ATP levels.

Supplemental Story

Assessing the value of dietary supplements Finding out who regulates dietary supplements Making wise choices about supplements Getting your nutrients from food 7 he Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that every year, Americans buy millions of bottles and boxes of dietary supplements, a 19 billion business that includes everything from plain old vitamin C to yuck desiccated (dried) liver. You can stir up a good food fight in any group of nutrition experts simply by asking whether all these supplements are (a) necessary, (b) economical, or (c) safe. But when the argument's over, you still may not have a satisfactory official answer, so this brief chapter aims to provide the information you need to make your own sensible choices. Introducing Dietary Supplements The vitamin pill you may pop each morning is a dietary supplement. So are the calcium antacids many American women consider standard nutrition. Echinacea, the herb reputed to short-circuit your winter cold, is, and so...

The Wall

FACT ALL of those pro bodybuilders trying to coax you to purchase the next wave of NATURAL supplements GUARANTEEING massive growth, got that big NOT from the natural supplements they're marketing.but rather by pumping massive quantities of ANABOLIC STEROIDS through their veins

Anabolic Steroids

From the looks of it the supplement industry is using science to close the gap between natural supplements and steroids. However I will show you what's really going on. There are very few companies racing to bridge this gap. Others are using science to simply sell their supplements.

Buyer Beware

In 1989, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defined a dietary supplement as a substance made of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. The following year, an act of legislation came down the pike broadening the term dietary supplements to include herbs and similar nutritional substances. Then in 1994, another act from the Feds established yet another definition. Here are the rules that allow a company to identify and market a product as a dietary supplement today > The product must be labeled as a dietary supplement. Before we get into some of the most popular individual supplements on the market, consider these random facts on dietary supplements

What are Supplements

Before the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) was passed in 1994, supplements were considered to be vitamins, minerals, and protein. You could not get chromium picolinate, DHEA, or certain amino acids without a prescription. After this act was passed, the definition of a supplement changed and now includes vitamins, minerals, herbs, botanicals (excluding tobacco), and dietary substances that could be used to supplement your diet by increasing total dietary intake. Now, our laws seem to be more liberal than anywhere in the world.

Herbal Supplements

In some countries herbal medicine and herbal supplements are classified as dietary supplements, and are being used more and more in sports nutrition, so are pertinent to this ebook. Herbs have been noted in some cases to have drug-like qualities, and they are frequently used in cookery for taste and garnish. Many of today's pharmaceutical preparations were derived from herbs many years ago, and some herbs and drugs are very similar in their mode of action. Some cultures still use herbal medicine more so than conventional medicine. Metabolism in the body of some herbs is by the same mechanism as their drug counterpart.

Vitamin deficiencies

Terms, however, the phrase has become a handy explanation for common but hard-to-pin-down symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, nervousness, emotional depression, allergies, and insomnia. And it's a dandy way to increase the sale of nutritional supplements. Simply put, the RDAs protect you against deficiency. If your odd symptoms linger even after you take reasonable amounts of vitamin supplements, probably something other than a lack of any one vitamin is to blame. Don't wait until your patience or your bank account has been exhausted to find out. Get a second opinion as soon as you can. Table 10-2 lists the symptoms of various vitamin deficiencies.

Why use supplements

Nutritional supplements are good because they prevent us from getting any nutritional deficiencies. The increased activity levels from your new exercise program will make your body have greater demands for vitamins and minerals, which will increase the probability of you suffering a deficiency without supplementation. Even a slight nutrient deficiency can sabotage muscle growth.

Time to Retest

If your cholesterol has not improved to a level that represents reduced risk factors, yet you were satisfied with your weight reduction and other physical improvements, continue to do Atkins, take the cholesterollowering nutritional supplements outlined on page 309 (also refer to Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution) and repeat the test in a month. Continue to get retested every three months until the figures are satisfactory, then have them checked only annually.

Why Supplements

You'll also want to protect yourself from some of the nutritional pitfalls that can come from heavy training. Potassium is one of the essential dietary minerals, and it can be lost in sweat. This can be especially important to the bodybuilder, because even mild potassium deficiency can lead to fatigue and decreased performance.12

Supplemental Science

The desire to meet that need has, at times, lead the sports nutrition industry to weaken its credibility in that there are many companies producing products that are simply a waste of money their products either don't work or they don't put into the product what the label claims Yet, there are numerous companies making products that are effective and helpful for the athlete and knowing how to incorporate these dietary supplements into your eating and training plan may make a difference in recovery and performance leading to faster gains.

Vitamins

Vitamins are essential to normal bodily functions. Although they're not an energy source, vitamins can contribute to your recovery and to keeping you healthy during your training. There's nothing worse than being sidelined with a cold or falling victim to a chronic illness. A well-balanced diet rich in variety and color can provide ample supplies of vitamins including A, B complex, C, D, E, and K. But vitamin supplements are an acceptable backup to a balanced nutritional plan.

Energetics

Five days high dose creatine feeding enhanced creatine disposal and glycogen storage in rat skeletal muscles (Op't et al., 2001). The creatine and glycogen response was markedly greater in oxidative than in glycolytic muscles. This investigation contributes to the understanding of how the increased use of creatine by athletes, as a dietary supplement, improves their physical performance.

LCarnitine LTartrate

During high-intensity exercise, carnitine concentrations in the blood and muscle are reduced. In blood vessels, this depletion could lead to compromised bloodflow and poor oxygen delivery. Carnitine supplementation may prevent this compromise in bloodflow, allowing more tissue perfusion, more oxygen delivery, and less muscle damage. Specifically, studies have shown that L-carnitine L-tartrate can reduce muscle disruption and markers of muscle breakdown after exercise as well as attenuate the rise in markers of oxidative damage. Despite past research that had not been positive, L-carnitine supplements have remained popular. Since previous research examined only a narrow hypothesis (that carnitine could increase fatty acid transport into the mitochondrion, leading to increased aerobic performance and increased fat burning), and results were scattered and far from definitive, many athletes and nutritionists have written off this popular dietary supplement. However, new data have begun to...

Dietary fiber

20.68 If you take a lot of vitamin supplements you may find that your urine is colored even though its volume and frequency of production are high. In such a case you will need to judge your hydration by the volume and frequency of urination rather than by their lack of color. But the discoloration caused by some vitamin supplements will only occur within a few hours of supplementation, not all day. If your vitamin intake heavily discolors your urine that is probably a good reason to reduce your supplementation because a lot of it is going waste.

Calcium

Although bodybuilders typically consume large amounts of food and nutritional supplements, they often skimp on dairy products, even low fat varieties. The case nowadays is whey-based protein powders are mixed with water and not milk. As dairy products are the largest contributors to calcium intakes, if you do not consume sufficient amounts, other sources of calcium have to be eaten. Another great source is naturally bony fish, like sardines and pilchards.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin and a family of compounds called cobalamins which includes cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, and the two coenzyme forms 5'-deoxyadenosyl-cobalamin (adenosylcobalamin) and methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin are used in most dietary supplements, and are converted into adenosylcobalamin and methylco-balamin in the body. Vitamin B12 found in nature appears to be from microbial synthesis. Meats and meat products, especially liver and kidney, are rich sources of vitamin B12. In animal foods, vitamin B12 is derived from the animals' diets or from synthesis by the intestinal microflora. Thus, livers and kidneys of ruminants contain more vitamin B12 than those of nonruminants. The most prevalent forms of vitamin B12 in animal foods are adenosylcobalamin, methylcobalamin, and hydroxocobalamin. Vitamin B12 is generally stable if protected from light. Cobalamins are considered to be stable to thermal processing, but large losses of the...

Beyond A Century BAC sells many nutritional supplements that can be useful on a ketogenic diet. They have both an in-house brand as well as selling many well-known products from other companies. They also carry unique products (such as DMSO and Guar Gum) that are difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere.

The Formulas

I'm not in the business of manufacturing nutritional supplements, but I would like to outline a series of formulas that could be produced to maximize anabolic effects, minimize catabolism, and give you the final piece in the puzzle in transforming training, lifestyle, diet, and supplements to maximum muscle growth. I am currently working with Optimum Training Systems about the possibility of creating various nutritional supplement formulas for use with the Anabolic Diet.
