v. Even before soccer's quadrennial global showcase began, Jonathan Bornstein was a World Cup hero—to Hondurans. During an October qualifying match against Costa Rica, the USA defender headed a corner kick into the net for a game-tying goal. The play eliminated Costa Rica from World Cup competition and propelled Honduras into the tournament for the first time since 1982. The goal came in the 95th minute of the game, a time when many players run out of gas. "That's what you train for day in and day out," he says. "I pride myself on being one of the fittest guys on the team, so that when a chance to score at the 95th minute comes along, I'm still able to push through."
